11th Hour volunteers provide compassionate presence and comfort to TRU patients who are imminently dying and prefer not to be left alone. They also offer respite for caregivers who need a break from companioning their loved ones. 11th Hour vigil support includes multiple 3-hour volunteer shifts to cover an individualized schedule, usually overnight. An End-of-Life Doula (EOL Doula) practices non-medical holistic death care that assists the family and the dying person navigate through the physical, emotional, spiritual, and practical aspects of one’s end of life journey. Doulas work directly with clinical staff as necessary. Doulas may support patients in planning end of life experiences, including funeral planning, and can advocate for patient’s wishes post death. Veteran volunteers and/or volunteers with military knowledge conduct Veteran pinning ceremonies wherever a patient resides while receiving TRU hospice or palliative care services. Per the patient or family's request, pinning ceremonies may be conducted bedside 1:1 or in a room full of the patient’s loved ones and staff.
