Compassionate Care. Changing Lives.
Seeking to embrace and support a mission beyond our local community, in 2006 TRU Community Care and Hospice formed a partnership with Bumbuli Hospice in Tanzania. This special relationship remains strong, with TRU employees making generous contributions and traveling to Tanzania to work alongside Bumbuli’s team to learn more about the challenges they face.
Through these experiences, we’ve recognized the immense need for end-of-life care in Bumbuli. We’ve also witnessed the remarkable compassion and efficiency of the team in responding to area needs.
$1 Goes a Long Way in Tanzania
Bumbuli’s palliative care team and volunteers stretch every available resource to care for as many terminally ill individuals as possible. The need is great, so we are reaching out to our community for additional support to fund holistic hospice services,
effective medications, stable housing, nutritious food, and schooling for vulnerable children. All monies donated go toward the Bumbuli program.
Six full and part-time staff coordinate the work of the hospice, including a medical director, physician’s assistant, team coordinator, assistant coordinator, social worker, and chaplain.
Forty three volunteers — who are nominated by and reside in the villages they serve — provide triage, dispense medications, and refer patients to the hospice team when appropriate.
Between 300-350 patients and their families — and many more vulnerable children, including orphans — benefit from practical care and support offered through home visits, Kid’s Club, assistance with school expenses, and access to weekly clinics conveniently hosted in surrounding villages.
71% HIV/AIDS, 7% Asthma, 6% Cancer, 6% TB, 3% Epilepsy, 7% Other
A 10-person Toyota Land Cruiser takes the team as far as they can drive along steep, winding, unpaved roads. Then the team walks long distances to reach clients who live in surrounding villages.
